About this site
Employer Checkup is a set of free calculators that help small businesses understand worker classification, 1099 reporting and Form I-9 rules, and what it costs to get them wrong.
Who builds it
I'm Robert Jackson, a J.D. with more than 20 years in legal operations and compliance: audit-ready recordkeeping, written procedures, compliance audits and immigration petition support.
I am based in Houston, Texas. Nothing on this site creates an attorney-client or professional relationship, nor should it be taken as legal or tax advice.
Why this site exists
Most small businesses that misclassify workers or make I-9 mistakes aren't trying to cut corners. The rules are spread across the IRS, the Department of Labor, USCIS, ICE and state agencies, and they change: the 1099 threshold jumped from $600 to $2,000 for 2026, and penalty amounts adjust with inflation. These tools put the rules, the deadlines and the dollar figures in one place, with sources.
How the calculators work
- Each calculator names the rule it applies and the statute or agency guidance it comes from.
- Results are estimates for planning. Real outcomes depend on the facts, the agency and any negotiated settlement.
- Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or stored.
